ADOM Release 51 now available for download

After a very long period of silence (due to complicated internal work that needed to be done for Steam, one vacation, a short period of work overload and many other factors) things now are moving much faster again.

We are proud to announce ADOM Release 51 (version 1.9.0). Here's the change log. This release still is work in progress as we are trying very hard to get ADOM ready for Steam (it would be a shame to miss Christmas time on Steam). Sadly there is still a ton of stuff to be done (and tax questions regarding the crowd funding campaign from the German tax offices don't really simplify my life...).

Nonetheless this will give you a first impression of the new graphical character creation sequence, he new challenge of the week game mode (I even created a forum to discuss challenge of the week games), the awesome customization options for your personalized game (difficulty levels, RPG mode and much more) and many more details. Especially in the graphical mode. Just try it and enjoy.

Edit: RPG mode does not yet work correctly. Trying to save the game and continue playing will crash it. Sorry for the oversight. R52 will fix it.

Here are some teasers:

The start screen with some more refinements (and animations this picture doesn't show):

The main menu with context explanations...

The character creation menu with all the gameplay options (and there are more to come with some shortcut commands):

The results of star sign selection (the actual selection animation is way awesome):

Part of the graphical character creation process... when hovering over a profession (or race) you'll see to the right what your character would look like:

New details during game play... notice something?

And there's so much more. As usual we love to receive feedback and now will try to hurry the Steam release along.

If you are not yet a member of the prerelease testing circle, become one :-)

And now enjoy!

  2. As we seem to be receiving very little feedback I probably should add an explanation: You can play R51 very well. "Saving in RPG mode (actually story mode)" means that if you deactivate permadeath, the saving feature doesn't work. If you play ADOM as the roguelike it always was everything works fine. So please play and give us feedback ;-)

    1. A good number of players are waiting for the game on steam to finally buy it so your missing out on a giant chunk of people to test the game for you due to the last prelease being in may.

  3. Ah, I was trying to work out why I wasn't having any problems saving and loading. :) (I have toyed around with the corruption toggle, monster-difficulty, and treasure options .. but I like permadeath, so didn't try that -- apart from clicking to see what choices it had.)

I must say, those new starting screens -- with the animation and sound -- are freaking awesome. Beautiful graphical touches in character creation, and I adore the circular animation of the birth sign. You couldn't have chosen a better artist to do this deluxe-version facelift. ..and those changing weapon and shield sprites on the player now? Wow. I can't even contemplate how much work that might have been.

I seriously thought, way back at the beginning, that I was gonna stick with the ASCII version of ADOM. That quickly changed.

    1. Hey! Glad someone noticed the weapons/shields change :) Bit of extra work, but being able to tell at a glance what kind of weapons you're wielding is rather important! Esp. against disarming/acidic/rust enemies.

    2. I'm so glad to hear that. I always hated it with my dwarf priest that sprite was wielding 2h staff when I had sword and shield equipped. Good work.

I don't have access to new builds, but still nice to hear some news. I'll buy deluxe edition on steam asap when it's finished.

  4. ..I might have gushed a little there. I don't apologise. :)

  5. Wow, ADOM is really starting to look beautiful!

All of these new additions and changes are really exciting, and I cannot wait to try them out. I will definately be purchasing the deluxe edition on Steam as soon as it is available. Very excited!

  6. The artist is amazing, I love the new start screens and I further love the fact that if I save the game to use only ASCII, the freaking start screen goes ASCII (mind = boom). Before I was rather ambivalent about the new start screen visuals… but consider me converted!

ADOM and TOME, indisputable leaders of the Roguelike Genre.

  7. I love the new game, I have encountered a small problem when using the ASCII version on Ubuntu 14.10, I get the following error: adom: 1: adom: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")") , is there anyway that this can be sorted out? Thanks.

    1. "word unexpected" is a message from the shell, not ADOM itself. How do you start ADOM?

    2. I tried using the terminal, directing it to the ADOM folder and type sh adom, I get that error, also I try executing the file directly but that doesn't work either.

    3. Sorry, made a noob mistake while using the terminal, got it sorted out, thanks.
