ADOM Release 52 now available for download

We are happy to announce ADOM Release 52. Mostly it's a bugfix release with some pretty important fixes:
  • Challenge games now should work correctly and are better explained in the game.
  • Saving in story mode now works correctly (e.g. you can save in a game and restore the game even after dying; results will be logged in a separate highscore list).
  • We have adjusted the save file format but your old save files should be compatible (make a backup copy nonetheless just to be sure). This should be the first time we successfully use the new "upwards compatible save file functionality introduced in R52).
Additionally release 52 contains another couple of tuned features and fixed bugs, see the change log for the complete details.

Finally release 52 finishes another discussion: The internal version number is 1.10.0. Thus it now is clear that after 9 comes 10 and we no longer will restart ADOM 0.9.9 Gamma 6 prerelease 3 trends or whatever. The current plan is that the first Steam release will be ADOM 2.0.0. Hopefully before Christmas.

If you are not yet a prerelease tester use the chance to become one. For all prerelease testers the latest version can be downloaded in the usual place.

  1. If the first Steam release is ADOM 2.0.0, will this affect the name of your next game ? Some people could get confused between, for instance, ADOM 2.0.0 (first game) and ADOM II 1.0.0 (second game)...

    1. Yeah, that's bothering me, too. I guess afterwards we quickly need to release an iOS version (3.0.0), an Android version (4.0.0) or an Xbox version (5.0.0) or something like that ;-) Just to give back some meaning to a major version change.

    2. And jt has a point below... the R... numbering scheme should prevent confusion with ADOM II.

  2. What's with the version numbers? I thought we were only releasing "R.." versions now? 8)

    1. We do. I just wanted to mention the thing about the internal version numbering as it was a hot point in the past ;-)

  3. I really love the new PC sprites and opening screens. And the chaos blob for random characters is so cute! But there are a couple of things about R51 and R52 that perturb me and discourage me from playing these versions over R50:
    1. Neutral monsters how have a yellow outline for the health bar rather than grey. It feels like the game is shouting "Look out! there's a monster who doesn't care about you!"
    2. I still see frequent error messages to the effect that a game event is not linked to a subroutine.
    3. I use the shift key a lot, and that toggles the text displays above the health bars on and off. I can disable this in the Noteye menu, but then the nice little star icon for pets and specials goes away too. The text box is a neat idea but it should take a more unusual key combination to turn it on and off.

    1. Thanks! JT reposted this on our internal forums and these issues are being looked at. We really do appreciate the feedback :)

  4. 1. So far we are only planning a Steam DRM version as we want to use the Steam client functions for various enhancements. To be honest I'm not familiar with that other option you mention.
    2. There will be ADOM versions available from other sites like GOG (a while after the Steam release), so if you want DRM-free, that's possibly the way to go.
    3. No, the crowd mode is not yet working. Probably with the next release.
    4. No coupons planned. All Indiegogo backers of $40+ donations (in whatever combination) will have the choice of either a free coupon for Steam of of receiving one of the other Deluxe versions later on.

  5. Why make us choose between the Steam version and the DRM-less version? Nowadays most indie games on Steam give you both the DRM-free download and the Steam key if you buy them from the developers' website (FTL, One Way Heroics, anything in Humble Indie Bundles, etc.)

I don't think it benefits anyone to give the users access only to one version - they have bought the game, anyway, and it's not like anyone will buy *both* versions only to have it both on Steam and outside Steam.

  6. As an example of why this can be inconvenient, for me the decision would not be trivial: should I choose Steam in order to be able to have global rankings, achievements, crowd mode, etc., or should I choose DRM-less in order to be able to play when I travel to a conference with my netbook, when I do a extended stay abroad, etc.?
